The History
The Hotel Saint-Marc was built in 1791 on the site of the private residence of the Duc de Choiseul and was one of the most magnificent properties in Paris during the 18th century. It extended from rue Saint-Marc to the ramparts of Paris, and had three large gardens. Some of the hotel rooms overlook the Salle Favart, Opera Comique that was constructed during the same period.
The illustrious Duc de Choiseul was known for his political genius, scathing spirit and his love of art. Superficial and frivolous, and often even shameless, he passed on to prosperity a number of his scintillating repartees, including ""j'aime mon plaisir à la folie"" (I love my pleasure madly""). It was also in this house that the solemn protest was drafted that triggered the Revolution of 1830.
